How to quote brass threaded inserts and bushings correctly — knurl, pilot, thread, host material and install method for moulding and assembly teams.

Threaded inserts fail quietly until the plastic boss strips or the mating screw cross-threads on the line. Buyers who source inserts as “small brass parts” without knurl, pilot and length data usually pay twice — once for the wrong batch, once for rework. This article is for OEM and moulding buyers who need a clear path to a brass threaded inserts manufacturer quote.

Insert versus bushing: say which job you have

Language gets loose in emails. On this desk we separate the jobs:

  1. Threaded insert — usually moulded or installed into plastic to take a machine screw.
  2. Bushing / sleeve — more often a plain or stepped bore used as a wear surface, spacer or guide, sometimes with internal thread.

If your part is a knurled insert for a plastic enclosure, do not send a plain bushing photo and expect the same quote structure. Name the installation method.

What the plastic (or metal) mating part demands

Insert performance is a system, not a SKU photo. Tell us:

  • Host material (ABS, nylon, PP, die-cast, etc.) if known
  • Boss ID and wall around the boss
  • Install method — mould-in, press, heat, ultrasonic
  • Screw size and engagement length
  • Whether the insert sees torque cycles or one-time assembly
Shop-floor note: A knurl that bites well in nylon can crush a thin ABS boss. If you changed plastic grade since the last PO, say so — the insert geometry may need a second look even when the screw size stayed the same.

Drawing notes that prevent silent rejects

Call out partial threads, unthreaded lead, and any hex or slot for installation tooling. If the insert must sit flush, define flush to which face. If pull-out or torque targets exist from your QA lab, attach them as requirements — do not assume a generic “strong knurl” phrase is enough.

Packing for moulding cells

Inserts are small and easy to mix. Ask for size-labelled bags when multiple SKUs ship together. Magnetic or oily contamination matters for some plastics — mention clean-pack needs when relevant.

Installation method changes the geometry conversation

Mould-in inserts need discussion about flash, orientation and whether the mould tool locates on a pilot. Heat-set and ultrasonic inserts need a lead that matches your horn / tip practice and a knurl that matches boss material. Press-in inserts need interference that the boss can survive. If you change install method mid-programme, treat the insert as a revision even when the screw size stays M3 or M4.

Buyers sometimes send only the screw size. That is not enough. Two M4 inserts can differ in OD, knurl angle, length and flange — and only one will survive your boss. Always pair screw size with OD/length/knurl.

Torque, pull-out and when numbers are real

If your QA team holds a minimum installation torque or pull-out load, put the test method on the RFQ. “Strong insert” is not a test method. We will not invent catalogue Newton values without a defined procedure and host material. When numbers matter, plan a joint sample trial in your plastic, not a promise on paper alone.

For metal housings using threaded bushings, press-fit OD tolerance and chamfer usually decide success more than knurl talk. Separate those RFQs from moulding-insert RFQs so the quote assumptions stay clean.

Repeat orders and SKU hygiene

Give every insert a stable internal code that includes thread and length. When you clone a product family across colours of the same plastic, confirm the boss ID did not drift with the mould revision. Many “sudden insert failures” are boss changes, not brass changes.

If you buy inserts alongside fasteners from the same desk, keep line items separate: insert SKU, screw SKU, optional washer SKU. Kitting is optional; identity is mandatory.

Drawing callouts that save a requote

On the insert print, call out thread relief if the screw must seat fully, and call out any hex or slot used by installation tooling. If the flange is cosmetic on one face and structural on the other, mark the show face. If the insert is blind, state closed-end length so mould designers do not assume a through hole.

For stepped OD inserts, dimension each diameter and length segment. A single “OD” note on a stepped part is how wrong pilots get cut. When heat-set depth is controlled by a shoulder, dimension that shoulder explicitly.

Share mating screw engagement length when possible. An insert can be thread-correct and still too short for the clamp load your joint needs. Engagement is a joint design input, not a decoration on the brass line.

FAQ

Can you reverse-engineer an insert from a sample?

Yes. Send the sample or detailed photos with OD, length, thread and knurl notes. We quote against measured geometry; we do not copy other companies’ trade names.

Do you only make moulding inserts?

No. Threaded bushings and related sleeves are in the same conversation when the drawing fits. Start in inserts and clarify the host material.

Is plating required on brass inserts?

Often not. Natural brass is common. Specify plating only when corrosion or appearance rules demand it.

What if my boss drawing is still in prototype?

Send the current boss ID and wall, plus expected plastic. We can quote a candidate insert and revise when the boss freezes.
