The gap is usually material language, not machining skill. Why grade belongs on the quotation request, not in a later email

CW614N and IS 319 are not interchangeable labels. Compare requirements and approve alternatives before production. Material certificates report conformity; they do not redefine a standard.
When “standard machining brass” is enough
Machinability is important for turned components, but a broad trade description is not a complete production specification. State the accepted alloy and material requirements. For an open design, request an exact proposal and approve it before production.
Do not infer suitability for water, gas, electrical or other service from ease of machining. Confirm application requirements, finish and evidence with the material definition.
When you should not leave grade blank
Leave a blank grade only when you truly accept a proposed machining brass for a non-critical sample. Do not leave it blank when any of these apply:
- The customer drawing already names an alloy or standard
- The part sees continuous water contact and a DZR / special duty note exists
- Plating, tinning or nickel finish is critical to colour and adhesion
- You are matching a legacy sample that failed in one grade before
- Export paperwork or incoming inspection will check mill certificates
In those cases, write the grade in the quotation request subject or material field in the same words as the drawing. If you only have a sample, say so: “sample available; propose an alloy for approval and identify required verification” is clearer than silence.
